Milk thistle (Silybum marianium L.) is a plant from the Asteraceae family, native to the Mediterranean basin. Currently, it is common all over the world – it grows mainly in fields, meadows and gardens. Used in herbalism for over 2000 years, it is grown commercially in Europe and America.

Source of silymarin

Herbal raw material is fruit – small gray-brown achenes located in flower baskets. In 1969, active compounds were isolated from them, including silymarin (a complex of flavonolignans), which began to be used in supplementation.

Liver support

Silymarin contained in milk thistle is characterized by a very wide spectrum of positive effects on liver cells – milk thistle contributes to maintaining its proper condition. It also supports digestion and cleanses the body. In addition, it has a positive effect on the heart and increases the body’s resistance to harsh environmental conditions.

Milk thistle extract has been enriched with a number of other ingredients valued for their properties for the liver. Artichoke improves digestion by stimulating the secretion of bile acids by the liver. Turmeric, and in particular the curcumin it contains, has antioxidant properties. Reishi mushroom supports the immune system and contributes to lowering cholesterol levels.

Inositol and choline are among the natural components of lecithin, whose polar structure means that this compound can transport fatty acids and cholesterol in the blood.
